Lightweight, high-quality aluminium walkway systems for New Zealand and Pacific industrial and commercial applications
Developed for superior roof protection, our roof walkway systems are lightweight for minimal loads, strong for maximum spans and raised to avoid debris traps.
Made from premium aluminium or Fibre Reinforced Plastic (FRP), our lightweight, strong walkway structures and catwalk bridges transfer loads to the roofing structure, bearing no weight on the roofing itself. They clamp lightly onto the roofing profile and transfer loads through the same fixing points as the roofing itself to be fully compatible with your roofing warranty. The aluminium beams span up to 3m between supports while maintaining a massive live load of 2.5Kpa/m, or about three people per square metre. The long spans mean fewer contact points with the roofing for greater design and installation flexibility. All materials are corrosion-free, compatible with modern roofing systems and use open knurled mesh for non-slip access even in icy conditions. These walkways are teamed with our handrails androof guardrail systems and can be combined with commercial roof ladders for access.
Our aluminium walkways systems can be delivered nationwide or to the Pacific Islands including Tonga, Samoa and Fiji.

Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the main difference between the Smartwalk Walkway and the Skywalk Walkway?
The Monkeytoe Smartwalk walkway is a full aluminium fabricated system which results in a very strong walkway. Being fabricated with 2 specialised side beams means this walkway can span up to 3m with loading of 2.5kpa/m.
The Skywalk is a lighter walkway that spans a maximum of 2.4m between supports and then has the FRP Deck clipped to support beams underneath. The Skywalk is a lighter construction, but more modular.
Why don’t timber walkways do the job?
Timber walkways cause two issues;
The tannin in the timber reacts with the colour steel and will often begin corroding within one year of installation. Even where malthoid has been installed between the timber and the roofing, the same reaction happens.
Timber retains moisture which keeps can keep the roof wet 100% of the time. Colour steel must be given a chance to dry out and without that chance it begins to corrode. Although timber is sometimes more cost effective to install, it will cause many longer term maintenance issues and associated costs.
When does a walkway require handrails?
When the walkway is near a potential fall area of more than 300mm so generally when the roof has a pitch of more than 7°.

The problem that we had was that the existing egress stair was chosen to be used on our new job as the building interface. So, the solution was the Monkeytoe access system on the outside of the building which gave the occupants inside the live hotel, the ability to use that stair while we had or removed the existing stair down the side of the building.
By using Monkeytoe is was an offsite pre-fabrication process that allowed us to build and prepare the rooms and openings while it was built offsite.
Time's money in construction and we had the problem of a piling contractor that was fast approaching the location of where we needed to drop the existing egress stair. So effectively we had two channels of production - rather than preparing the opening, removing all the scaffold and then rebuilding everything modularly, it was all pre-fabricated and brought into us as soon as we were ready.
The solution that Monkeytoe proposed, and what we were working with, had the two concurrent streams of production happening at the same time. The other options of pre-fabrication weren't available, so it was an obvious choice to use Monkeytoe at the time.
Definitely recommend Monkeytoe to others for access solutions
Monkeytoe was very professional and helpful from the onset. They have an impressive range of designs for roof access and it’s obvious why they are leaders in the industry.

Monkeytoe were engaged to supply us with an alternative to our traditional structural steel rooftop mechanical plant platform.
The design utilising strong and lightweight materials is a great advantage. The seamless interface of their supports with our traditional structural steel roof beams works perfectly.
An all-in-one package complete with deck structure, mesh and sound wall, had a positive affect to the program that was a great bonus for the construction team. Monkeytoe did it all with great efficiency and speed, saving construction costs and time to our overall program. All components arrived from New Zealand on time and in good condition (even with the added complications of Covid-19!). Initial assembly was done in the carpark of the site and then easily craned into position on the roof.
The Monkeytoe team in New Zealand and here in Australia were efficient, easy to work with and a pleasure to deal with. We are more than proud to have the first of your systems, on our site, in Australia.
Originally the HVAC for Target road was designed across 4 platforms with numerous walkways for serviceability. However after a rethink and redesign a single platform was proposed and after discussions with Monkeytoe Xbeam was suggested as a solution. The advantages for our client have been the reduction of walkways, the ability to add an additional Air Con unit for future proofing and the reduction in structural upgrade with Xbeam supported from portal frames.

Vitaco’s requirement for a 70m long elevated walkway was quickly understood by Monkeytoe and we were given 3D designs to review. Monkeytoe’s engineers worked closely with our architects and engineers to produce a final design. We’ve been kept well informed throughout the project and the result is an impressive looking walkway, which is rock solid, a critical factor as it’s 7m above the warehouse floor and used by 50 staff everyday.
The new ANZ Christchurch Stadium was designed & built within 100 days! An astounding feat in itself and a true testament to the team involved, in terms of commitment, dedication & enthusiasm to make it happen. Monkeytoe arose to the challenge in both designing a creative solution to our access needs as well as delivering a quality product on site.
Well done to the Monkeytoe team and we look forward to working with you again.
We were pleased to have a comprehensive Monkeytoe roof access system installed on one of our high-profile retail properties. Monkeytoe assisted us in achieving our vision to provide a safe work environment for everyone, protecting lives and assets. We now look forward to having a similar system installed to our other properties.

We have provided a safer, more accessible access method for our staff by using the Monkeytoe access solution.
Platform Deck was supplied, and installed as per our expectations and designed in a manner as to accommodate extra support underneath larger plant units. Some extra supports were required as the units had to be adjusted in position onsite therefore causing some minor point load issues, however Monkeytoe were more than helpful to supply the additional supports despite it being the fault of another contractor.
In our opinion and also in the opinion of our acoustic engineer, the finish quality of the plant deck and especially the acoustic screening was standout. The acoustic engineer was impressed with the design and also quality of finishing and said it was some of the best he has seen. In early days we did have some concerns as to how the platform would be fixed through the kingspan roofing however the mounting clips worked perfectly.
Exceptional quality and exceptional administration service!
No debris traps, allowing for natural wind and rain washing
No structural compromise or damaging leaks, protecting the integrity of the roof
