Only four kilometres from Christchurch’s CBD, The Palms is one of the city’s largest malls. There are 110 retailers in the complex, including the first Reading Cinema in the region.

Owners AMP Capital Investors have continued to expand and upgrade the building, doing major strengthening work on the property after it was damaged in the 2011 earthquakes.

Large parts of the roof used timber walkways. These sat directly on the roof, causing debris traps and leaching tannins, which can lead to corrosion and damage to a roof. Over time, the owners are working to replace these walkways and platforms with Monkeytoe systems. Walkways are raised off the roof to prevent debris from being caught, and the marine-grade aluminium comes with a lifetime warranty.
