The Challenge

Kiwirail required a new pedestrian/service bridge that could be delivered quickly and without disruption to its busy freight schedule. The installation window was extremely tight, meaning traditional on-site construction methods were not an option. The solution needed to be cost-effective, durable, and designed for long-term performance with minimal maintenance.

The Solution

Monkeytoe delivered a complete marine-grade aluminium bridge system, fabricated entirely offsite and transported to the rail corridor as a fully assembled 9.8m structure. This prefabricated approach ensured the bridge could be installed within the small available timeframe, minimising downtime and keeping Kiwirail’s freight operations on schedule.

Technical Collaboration

Monkeytoe worked closely with Novare Design to produce design drawings and the PS1 for the bridge structure. In turn, Novare Design was provided with detailed technical information from Monkeytoe to design the foundations and abutments that would suit the prefabricated aluminium bridge system.

Kiwirail oversaw the project as client lead, coordinating between Monkeytoe and Novare Design, and managing the logistics of the bridge installation. This collaborative model ensured efficiency and certainty across design, engineering, and installation.

The Result

The outcome was a fully functional, durable pedestrian/service bridge that met Kiwirail’s operational needs without compromising freight schedules. By using marine-grade aluminium, the bridge also offers superior corrosion resistance and longevity, ensuring performance well into the future with minimal maintenance requirements.
