The Department of Conservation (DOC) sought a durable and low-maintenance bridge solution for the Tawa Loop Track in Palmerston North. The bridge needed to provide safe pedestrian access while also supporting small diggers and maintenance vehicles for ongoing track work.
The Challenge
DOC required a structure that could withstand the elements and heavy use in a natural environment, without the long-term corrosion or maintenance issues commonly associated with steel or timber bridges. Accessibility for both the public and maintenance teams was a key consideration, alongside sustainability and lifespan.
The Solution
Monkeytoe designed and engineered a custom aluminium bridge specifically for the site — combining lightweight, corrosion-resistant materials with robust structural performance. The result was a purpose-built crossing capable of handling both pedestrians and small vehicles, providing a safe and efficient route for all users.
Prefabricated offsite and installed with minimal disruption to the environment, the bridge reflects Monkeytoe’s philosophy of innovation and safety by design, delivering practical solutions that make access better for everyone.
The Outcome
The new bridge at the Tawa Loop provides a long-lasting, low-maintenance solution that enhances accessibility and supports DOC’s mission to protect and connect people with nature. The structure’s combination of strength, functionality, and sustainability ensures it will serve the community and the environment for decades to come.
